Silvestras Dikčius – Championing climate action and sustainability in Vilnius

Silvestras Dikčius, a climatologist and influential communicator in Lithuania, has dedicated his career to raising awareness and promoting action on climate change and sustainability.

Initially trained in meteorology and climatology at Vilnius University, Dikčius began his professional journey as a weather forecaster, quickly becoming a familiar face on Lithuanian national TV. Driven by intellectual curiosity and a desire to explore broader societal contexts, he pursued a second bachelor's degree in philosophy. This unique educational background enables him to communicate complex climate issues to diverse audiences effectively.

Directing citizens towards climate action

Silvestras returned to his original passion of climate education, writing extensively on climate issues and sustainability practices. "The communication about climate change in Lithuania wasn't very effective," Silvestras recalls. "So, I thought I could contribute positively and improve how the topic was addressed publicly."

Today, Silvestras regularly delivers lectures to businesses, highlighting practical actions to foster sustainable practices. Moreover, he hosts an innovative podcast series on Lithuanian national radio, where sustainability topics are explored through dynamic conversations conducted during walks.

Silvestras’ commitment extends beyond climate science into tangible urban advocacy. His leadership role in the Lithuanian pedestrian association, first as a member and later as president, exemplifies his dedication to creating safer, greener urban spaces. "Vilnius, like many cities, has long been dominated by car traffic," Silvestras notes. "Our goal was to make the city more pedestrian-friendly and encourage alternative transportation, thus making urban living healthier and more sustainable."

A new chapter for Vilnius as a leading green city in Europe

When being asked what he thinks of Vilnius being the European Green Capital 2025, Silvestras sees a profound opportunity. "For me, this is a communication project," he emphasises. "It’s a chance to show citizens the tangible benefits of living in a truly green city and how it improves health, safety and comfort." Key initiatives in Vilnius include significantly expanded cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, support for community urban gardens, improved public transport options and numerous public education campaigns to encourage sustainable living practices.

Despite the challenges inherent in advocating for long-term environmental changes, particularly the slow pace of visible impact, Silvestras remains motivated by the significant shifts in public perception and behaviour. His lifestyle changes, such as avoiding car ownership and prioritising sustainable travel, serve as genuine examples to the community, inspiring others to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.

The power of successful, sustainable examples to foster stronger engagement

Silvestras believes strongly in the power of positive examples and continues to promote ‘sustainability hacks’, practical tips that demonstrate how sustainable actions can directly benefit individuals, enhancing their lives while also benefiting the planet.

As Vilnius continues its year as the European Green Capital, Silvestras’ relentless efforts symbolise the city's growing commitment to sustainability and serve as an inspiration to communities across Europe and beyond.
