The signing took place on 6 June during the opening ceremony of Guimarães’s EU Green Week 2025 event, underlining the city’s commitment to urban sustainability and its goal to become climate neutral by 2030.

Mayor Bragança also announced plans to create the Capital Verde Europeia (CVE) 2026 Sustainability Hub in Guimarães by 2030. The centre, with an expected investment of nearly EUR 15 million, will focus on innovation and research, community engagement and promoting a green, inclusive and liveable city. Referred to as a ‘Landscape Laboratory 2.0’, the hub aims to continue the legacy of Guimarães as the 2026 European Green Capital.

In his speech, Mayor Bragança highlighted the importance of science education and enhancing environmental literacy. The Green Week programme reflected these priorities with dozens of activities focused on improving environmental awareness. The event also featured talks by experts in environmental issues and immersive learning experiences for the public about urban sustainability.

The festivities also included exciting musical performances from Marisa Liz and Luís Trigacheiro, winner of The Voice Portugal.

Before the event concluded, the city hosted a ‘Moment of Celebration’, featuring a fireworks display designed to be environmentally responsible and visually impactful.

These activities showcased Guimarães’ innovative pilot projects and the city's efforts to involve local companies, institutions, schools and the community in building a greener future.

Following the celebrations, the first meeting of the European Green Capital 2026 Honorary Committee (ECC 2026) was held in the auditorium of the Guimarães Landscape Laboratory, also on 6 June. The committee brings together representatives from European and national institutions to support the city in preparing for 2026.
