The LIFE GreenMe5 project brings together five European cities to pilot innovative actions that support the Green City Accord and promote a healthier urban environment.

Co-financed by the EU’s LIFE Programme, the LIFE GreenMe5 project is a collaborative environmental initiative supporting the implementation of the Green City Accord in five European municipalities: Murcia and Cieza (Spain), Arezzo (Italy), Vilnius (Lithuania) and Helsingborg (Sweden).

Launched in 2023 and running until 2027, the project aims to foster sustainable urban management through cooperation, innovation and shared learning. GreenMe5’s core mission is to support cities in addressing key environmental challenges related to air quality, water, waste, noise and biodiversity – aligned with the five priority areas of the Green City Accord.

Pilot actions for real impact

Each participating city is implementing a pilot action designed to address specific local environmental issues:

  • Arezzo – A new clean point in the city centre will facilitate door-to-door collection of hazardous and high-value waste. The site will also serve as a hub for environmental education and community engagement.
  • Cieza – A school playground is being transformed to integrate biodiversity and natural elements, helping children connect more closely with nature in their daily lives.
  • Helsingborg – A two-stage ditch is being constructed to improve water quality, reduce flooding and enhance local biodiversity in agricultural zones.
  • Murcia – The city is targeting food waste in school canteens by auditing waste types, developing a reduction strategy, training staff and publishing a practical guide for other municipalities.
  • Vilnius – The city is conducting a comprehensive study on a selected street to identify and implement measures that reduce air pollution and transport-related noise.

A shared commitment to urban sustainability

GreenMe5 highlights the power of territorial cooperation in tackling urban environmental challenges. By exchanging knowledge and implementing concrete actions, the five cities are laying the foundation for scalable solutions that can inspire other signatories of the Green City Accord.

This project is coordinated by the federation of municipalities of the region of Murcia (FMRM) with technical support from EuroVértice. It reflects a growing commitment by European cities to become greener, healthier and more resilient for future generations.
